One of the most common comments I hear from potential customers is “Oh, I’m not skinny enough for pencil skirts” or “Pencil skirts don’t work for my shape.” Well, this size 12 (10 on a good day) designer is here to tell you that line of thinking is not true at all!
I started designing pencil skirts for myself because I couldn’t find anything in stores that suited my style and shape. Through geekchicfashion, I strive to help women find what I found, clothes that make you look, and most importantly, feel good about your body no matter the shape!
So today I bring you 5 tips to help you find the right pencil skirt fit to flatter your body.
Tip #1: Love your body
Nothing looks better on you than confidence! You can rock anything that suits your personal style if you believe you’re a stunner in it!
Tip #2: Know your measurements
Especially if you’re buying online, it’s important to know your waist and hip measurements when buying skirts. Here’s a quick diagram to help you know what to measure. Once you know your measurement always check the size chart…which brings me to tip #3.
A lot of pencil skirts (mine included) are designed to fit to the hip, then fall straight with a slight taper towards the hem. By sizing down you will be getting a skirt that is too tight and may highlight some areas you’d rather downplay. Choose a skirt based on your largest measurement remembering that jersey skirts are very stretchy. My skirts have a jersey waistband (no elastic), so they have a very forgiving waist size. However wearing a smaller hip measurement size will result in a tighter fitting skirt.
Tip #4: Style and accessorize accordingly
Ok, Lauren Makk from FABLife (yes, I watched that show #sorrynotsorry) is my style icon. She is a curvy woman and has a large chest, but she rocks a pencil skirt with amazing style and confidence, I LOVE it! She wears fitted tops (that work for her hourglass figure) and often uses belts/waist embellishments to highlight her tiny middle. Her killer shoes don’t hurt either! She should be inspiration for any of you ladies who doubt your ability to pull off the pencil skirt. Check her out:
My last tip, which is honestly new to me too, is rock that shape wear (think SPANX). I got my first piece of shape wear this year, and whoa! it’s amazing. I’m not much into telling women to use products that alter their already fabulous bodies, but I will make an exception for this. They simply smooth and slightly slim, giving you a polished look. They are not necessary for everyone, but if you feel like you could use a little boost, try one. I did, and I’m not ashamed to say it makes me feel a bit more confident.
I hope these tips will help you in choosing a pencil skirt for your shape and personal style. I’d love to help you find a style that suits your needs, so don’t hesitate to email me if you have questions or need advice!
